HUMANN

How do you build the brand while changing how the business grows?

Humann built the beet supplement category through SuperBeets, the number-one cardiologist-recommended beet brand.

The business had grown through direct-response advertising, with sales concentrated in DTC and Amazon.

Humann was now expanding its flagship product into more than 30,000 retail locations, including Walmart and Costco, while introducing a broader cardiovascular supplement portfolio outside of its core SuperBeets flagship.

The ChallengE

Humann’s media and measurement model reflected the business it had built, not the omnichannel business it was becoming.

TV, digital, and Amazon had separate owners. Media and creative were planned by channel and product. Performance was judged through attributed channel sales, even as more purchases took place through Amazon and retail.

The transition came with added pressure. Humann had introduced a new brand identity and packaging, but its creative remained focused on individual products. At the same time, lower-priced and lower-quality competitors with beet-based products and names were spending more across media, making it harder to stand out.

Eden began with a 90-day assignment to remove duplication and make Humann’s linear and connected TV media buys more effective. The team found opportunities to optimize both, but also saw that television alone could not solve the larger problem. Humann needed to align its media, creative, ownership, and measurement across the full marketing ecosystem.

THE INSIGHT

Humann’s move into retail changed more than where its products were sold.

The media strategy now needed to build awareness and understanding among shoppers who would encounter the brand at shelf, often long after the media exposure.

Eden’s diagnosis identified two gaps between Humann’s existing growth model and the omnichannel business it was building:

  1. The media strategy needed to build mental availability before the moment of choice. Humann’s DTC and Amazon model relied on high-frequency, product-led advertising to drive immediate response. Retail required Humann to be recognized and understood when shoppers encountered it at shelf, often far from the original media exposure. Eden’s analysis then identified whom to reach, how often, where, and at what cost, including significant differences across age and gender.

  2. The creative needed to establish Humann as a premium brand. The beet supplement category Humann created had become commoditized. Existing advertising did not reflect the product’s quality or price, while newer creative focused on category awareness without making a case for Humann’s stronger science and ingredients. Some people confused the ads with sports or energy advertising. Humann needed creative that communicated the science of blood flow, explained the product, established its premium value, and broadened cardiovascular health beyond older people and athletes.

WHAT CHANGED

An audience-led plan connecting media, creative, and measurement.

At the first quarterly review, Eden reframed the work around the whole marketing system.

Humann expanded Eden’s role twice:

  • first from television to full-funnel planning, budget allocation, channel strategy, and measurement, and

  • subsequently, in 2026, to all digital execution outside of Amazon.

Eden became the strategic center for the account and led execution across the remaining channels, while specialist agencies continued to manage TV and Amazon.

Eden replaced separate channel and product plans with an audience-led plan. The audience strategy was reframed across demographics and awareness stages. It distinguished older audiences, who are more reactive and diagnosis-based, from younger audiences, who focus proactively on a heart-healthy lifestyle and require different messaging.

Across the funnel, the strategy managed audience pools based on their relationship to the category and brand. It differentiated “knowable” audiences from “unknowable” ones rather than relying on performance algorithms that over-optimize for immediate conversion and restrict reach.

The planning model worked in two directions. Top-down planning established reach and frequency by evaluating audience channel consumption, reach costs, and the value of spill versus waste. Bottom-up planning added platform-level specificity for digital execution under modest budgets. It determined the “next best dollar spent” by prioritizing high-fidelity, knowable audiences, setting tailored KPIs across category and brand awareness stages, planning minimum frequency requirements, and guiding conversion without cutting off investment in longer-term prospects.

Eden also shifted the primary view from attributed TV sales to a measurement system operating at three levels:

  • Platform metrics guided execution and optimization within each channel.

  • Advertising brand lift measurement tracked movement from Awareness to Consideration, Consideration to Preference, and Preference to Trial.

  • Media mix modeling connected investment to Humann’s business KPIs and evaluated impact across the full mix.

Together, these gave Humann a clearer view of day-to-day performance, brand health, and business impact.

The team also built forecasting, return expectations, testing gates, and hypotheses into the plan.

The work expanded beyond media. Eden led the creative agency review, helped shape the communications strategy and brief, and connected the audience, advertising, media, distribution, and measurement around the same business goal.

Separately, Eden established a structured Learning Agenda of four to six hypothesis-driven tests across the year. These included whether category-aware digital audiences could drive incremental lift, whether broadening beyond key linear strategies could bring in new customers, whether the Humann brand could extend beyond SuperBeets, and whether a new social and creative approach could create incremental value.

Before each test, the team defined the methodology and success criteria needed to produce statistically reliable results. This gave Humann the evidence to make larger investment decisions with confidence.

THE RESULTS

A full-funnel media and measurement system built around business impact

The engagement grew from one television assignment into responsibility for Humann’s media strategy and measurement.

Humann now has:

  • One full-funnel plan organized around audiences

  • A measurement system connecting platform performance, brand lift, and media mix modeling to business impact

  • A communications strategy connecting the brand, category, and products

  • A shared blueprint for its specialist agencies

  • A structured Learning Agenda of four to six hypothesis-driven tests across the year

In Media Post, Humann’s Chief Growth Officer Mike Quinones described the change as:

“transforming our media system from spend management into a predictive growth engine.”
